New Research Focuses on Measuring Energy Efficiency
A study conducted over a six year period by the San Diego Regional Energy Office, a state-funded non-profit organization promoting energy efficiency and available online from HPAC Engineering magazine illustrates the challenges of understanding, measuring and managing energy efficiency solutions. The study performed more than 300 central-plant energy assessments, detailed measurement and verification analyses and energy simulations to determine that chiller plants are wasting a lot of energy. By extending all-variable-speed principles to chilled-water plants, substantial energy savings (over 60 percent, in some cases) can be achieved.

The article discusses ongoing studies of chilled-water plants in Southern California and compares a wide range of central-plant types to identify potential areas to improve energy efficiency. You can read the article at www.hpac.com, it is entitled Real Efficiencies of Central Plants.
